The Hope of God is with Us
Scripture: Luke 1:46-55
The whole point of Christmas is to celebrate “God is with Us!” The very point of Christmas is to realize we are no longer alone because God is with us! Somehow, we lose sight of God and don’t live through Christmas seeing, feeling, or believing His presence in our lives. Christmas should be the story of our lives, and the headline should be “God Is With Us!” Today, we are going to learn from the song that Mary praised God.
The realization that Mary’s hymn is a story not only about herself but about all those who fear God and are the objects of his mercy and grace.
Luke 1:46-49 (NLT)
46 Mary responded, “Oh, how my soul praises the Lord.
47 How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior!
48 For he took notice of his lowly servant girl, and from now on all generations will call me blessed.
49 For the Mighty One is holy, and he has done great things for me.
Mary is giving praise for how God is using her in His story.
Mary’s praise was driven by the great things God had done.
Luke 1:50-53 (NLT)
50 He shows mercy from generation to generation to all who fear him.
51 His mighty arm has done tremendous things! He has scattered the proud and haughty ones.
52 He has brought down princes from their thrones and exalted the humble.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away with empty hands.
These verses reflect upon the mighty deeds of God.
Mary knew God and what He had done.
Luke 1:54- 55 (NLT)
54 He has helped his servant Israel and is remembered to be merciful.
55 For he made this promise to our ancestors, to Abraham and his children forever.”
In these final two verses, Mary reveals the fullest extent of what she truly knows. Israel has been anticipating and waiting for a help-er ever since the fall in Genesis 3. Mary connects God’s promise to Abraham, His promise to David, and His promise to Israel because she knows that the promised seed is in fact the holy seed within her womb. Mary knows that her son will atone for the sins of His people with His own blood.
Mary knew her child was Israel’s redeemer.
Heart of the matter: undeserved grace.
Heart of the matter: God’s rescuing power.
- Rescue the helpless
- Exalt the humble
- Fill the hungry
